The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
